MacInnes Bros Ltd (MIB) were employed as the main subcontractor on behalf of KIER Construction Ltd with the erection of two industrial units at Castlebay Industrial Park, Isle of Barra. The erection of the units at Castlebay included a large amount of concrete works to build the base for the cladding building to be erected upon, installation of new windows and doors, internal blockwork, external works including the laying of monoblock and the construction of concrete footpaths, drainage services and the installation of plumbing, electrical and heating systems.
The works at Castlebay were carried out in the centre of the local village therefore, good relations with the local community were vital for the works to be completed successfully. MIB have carried out many works on Barra over the last 25 years so it was vitally important to us to maintain good relationships with members of the local community and to cause as little disturbance as possible. In such a small community we respect the members of the public and recognise the importance of mutual trust and regard when carrying out works.
Bearing in mind that the industrial units would be utilised by the public, MIB carried out a Value Engineering exercise at tender stage in order to offer the Client less expensive options for both plumbing and heating installation. Throughout the process we readily encouraged less expensive options to ensure maintenance costs for prospective tenants were kept to a minimum.
This contract was governed by the NEC Option A conditions under which MacInnes Bros were fully aware of the ethos of contractor/client cooperation and open lines of communication: we believe that we managed to encompass these elements into the day to day running of the contract, ensuring a positive outcome on all occasions.
This project was completed on budget and ahead of programme.
